Active RFID Tags

Active RFID tags are powered by an internal battery and are designed to transmit a signal repeatedly over a period of up to 5 years with steady beacon and up to 8 years with options of tamper sensors, motion sensors or alarm only.

The tags can be fixed either permanently or temporarily to all types of vehicles, assets, inventory and check points or carried by people, and can be detected from up to 50 meters (150 feet) away with the standard readers and antennas. Large numbers of tags can be monitored and detected simultaneously. Active RFID tag specifications include:

• Tags constantly transmit a “heartbeat” radio frequency pulse between 0.3 seconds and 40 seconds except USA which is 12-40 seconds.

• Long life battery technology – up to 5 years for a tag with a 1.5 second “heartbeat” rate.

•High impact resistant UV stabilized PVC case ultrasonically welded and sealed.

• 1 cm to 50 meter range with standard reader/antennas and 1,500+ meters with advanced styles of antennas.

• Each tag and heartbeat pulse is uniquely identified and numbered.

• Optional 26 bit Wiegand coding for access control systems.

• Optional in built HID or MIFARE electronics enables tags to be read by HID Prox, i-class and MIFARE access control readers in addition to Protrac RFID receivers.

• Optional motion sensor or movement alarm sensor.

Primary tag types include:

Personnel/visitor tags are Ultra Long Range RFID and are attached using standard ID card straps, lanyards or rings. Tags have a standard ID card footprint (CR80) for attaching a photo ID. All models are available with inbuilt MIFARE, HID prox or HID i-class electronics making the Active RFID personnel tag a personal photo ID and access-control tracking credential, all on the one “credit card” sized tag.

Pendant tags include opening for use with key fobs, for organizations that prefer the use of key fobs in-addition-to or rather-than standard or bracelet lanyard/strap tags.

Bracelet tags attach to a person’s wrist or ankle using a standard strap. Tags can be chemically sterilized, and worn in a bath or pool. Tags are monitored 24/7 and tracked for security and OH&S or simply detected when a person approaches certain points or areas, as personnel approaching a muster point.

Secure bracelet tags are Ultra Long Range RFID and specifically designed with an anti-tamper wrist band for applications where the highest level of security is required, such as prisons or psychiatric facilities.

Vehicle and asset tags are generally used for asset tagging applications, and can be mounted on all surfaces including metallic surfaces or plastics containing a high metal content. The mounting and affixing of a tag depends on the type of application. The standard method is by VHB double-sided adhesive tape and has the option of an inbuilt tamper switch for alarm upon tag removal.

Industrial tags are generally used in harsh environments and heavy duty applications. Industrial tags are ideally suited for operating on metallic surfaces or plastics containing a high metal content. In most applications, the mounting and affixing of the industrial tag will be via mounting holes provided which offers sturdy fixings. VHB type double-sided adhesive tape can also be used in less demanding environments. Industrial tags can be used with an external antenna for maximum transmission distances.

Duress tags include an inbuilt membrane switch for manual call functions such as emergency call, duress and machinery stop. Options include man down sensors and motion sensors which provides critical worker safety benefits and prolongs the battery life.

Temperature tags transmit their unique identification code and temperature at pre-determined intervals to the readers located up to 25 meters away. External temperature sensor (probe) for frozen/deep frozen area monitoring of temperature in the range -40°C to +20°C with an accuracy of better than ±2°C and a resolution of 1°C where only the probe is inside the refrigerated area.
